City of Burnaby provides update on anti-gang programming

Last updated: July 11, 2025

The City of Burnaby shared an important update on community safety programs aimed at reducing gang and gun violence through community-based interventions, City-led initiatives and research projects.

These programs are part of a series of initiatives funded by the federal Building Safer Communities Fund (BSCF), coordinated by the City and delivered in collaboration with non-profit groups, Burnaby RCMP and Simon Fraser University.

Community partner programs

Through the BSCF funding, Burnaby has collaborated with community organizations to deliver impactful programs tailored to youth and families.

Since 2023, these programs have directly supported:

  • 139 youth identified at high risk of gang involvement, providing critical intervention services.
  • Over 180 parents and caregivers with access to educational resources, counselling and support.
  • 186 youth participating in skill-building and mentorship programs to foster resilience and well-being.
  • Nearly 2,300 community members in youth-led projects to strengthen connections and empower leadership.

City-led initiatives

The City has also launched several initiatives to enhance public safety and foster community connection:

  • Changing Colours Youth Mural Program: Three murals have been created by youth, promoting creativity and positive engagement.
  • Gang and Gun Violence Prevention Videos: with over 38,000 views, these videos educate caregivers on recognizing risks and preventing youth gang involvement.
  • Community Safety and Well-Being Plan: BCSF funding supported the development of a new five-year safety strategy, which outlines 60 initiatives to enhance community safety in Burnaby.

Research projects

In partnership with Simon Fraser University’s School of Criminology, the Civic Innovation Lab has launched four research initiatives to address local youth gang risks:

  • Evaluation of Burnaby RCMP’s Gang Enforcement Team’s activities and outcomes.
  • Analysis of Burnaby RCMP Youth Section’s intervention strategies.
  • Assessment of School District 41’s prevention programs.
  • Exploration of root causes driving youth involvement in gang and gun-related activities to inform evidence-based strategies.

Findings from these studies are being reviewed for integration into practice to enhance community safety.
