Keeping utility rates down with City reserves

Last updated: January 13, 2026

Utility fees are collected to cover costs passed on to the City by Metro Vancouver and to fund the City’s costs associated with operating, maintaining and renewing water and sewer infrastructure. Through careful management, Burnaby has been able to use reserves to keep rate increases low for water and sewer services.

By drawing on our reserves, the City of Burnaby is striving to reduce the impact of cost increases from Metro Vancouver.

Here are the increases you’ll see in 2026:

  • 0% for water services
  • 3.5% for sewer services (approx. $26 for a house and $14 for a condo)

Actual increase in costs passed along to the City of Burnaby by Metro Vancouver:

  • 6.4% for water services
  • 7.62% for sewer services

The charts below show the breakdown of the how much of your utility fee goes to cover charges from Metro Vancouver, and how the City of Burnaby has used the City’s reserves to keep rates low for residents.

Water and Sewer service utility notices will be sent to residents in February 2026. Residents are encouraged to pay their utility bills by March 16, 2026 to benefit from the discounted amount.
