Joanne Morgan is 2025's Outstanding Citizen of the Year in Burnaby

Last updated: March 25, 2026

Mayor Mike Hurley and Burnaby City Council are pleased to present the Kushiro Cup to Joanne Morgan, 2025's Outstanding Citizen of the Year. This award honours Burnaby residents who make tremendous contributions in creating a connected, inclusive and healthy community.

Joanne has volunteered her time to support Burnaby’s seniors for more than a decade. A familiar and trusted face in City programs, Joanne spends much of her week helping seniors stay connected, supported and safe. From grocery shopping for homebound residents and making wellness check-in calls during extreme heat, to driving seniors to weekly lunch programs and social outings, her care shows up in both big moments and quiet, everyday acts of kindness. As a retired nurse, Joanne brings calm, skill and compassion to everything she does. She steps in during emergencies, supports first aid staff and looks out for those who may need extra help. She also gives her time as a Board Member with the Confederation Seniors Association, helping create welcoming spaces that reduce isolation and foster connection. “Joanne shows up. She follows through. And she truly cares,” say those who know her.

The City is proud to recognize Joanne, whose efforts embody the values that strengthen our community. The Kushiro Cup has been awarded since 1982, when the cup was first presented to the City of Burnaby by its sister city, Kushiro in Japan.
