City celebrates National Volunteer Week

Last updated: April 20, 2026

We are celebrating National Volunteer Week (April 19–25) and thanking Burnaby’s volunteers for their commitment, dedication, generosity and selflessness in helping to build a stronger, more connected community. Their contributions help shape the city we all want to live in and belong to.

This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, Ignite Volunteerism, celebrates the power of participation and the spark that inspires people to get involved. Volunteering ignites connection, purpose and belonging. By finding their own way to give back, volunteers create lasting change.

“Volunteers play a vital role in building a strong and connected Burnaby,” said Mayor Mike Hurley. “Through their time, energy and compassion, they ignite community spirit and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. National Volunteer Week is an important opportunity for us to express our gratitude for their contributions to Burnaby.”

Last year, more than 1,200 Burnaby volunteers contributed almost 67,000 hours of service. Volunteers support seniors, children and other residents by helping them access the assistance and support they need. They shop for groceries for housebound seniors, help deliver community events across the city and support efforts to restore and protect Burnaby’s natural environment. Volunteers consistently go above and beyond to support others and strengthen our community.

Thank you to all Burnaby volunteers for everything you do. Your passion and commitment truly help ignite a stronger Burnaby.
