We are inviting applications from community members to join a new Chinese Canadian Apology Public Art Project Committee, which will help guide the development of a permanent public artwork recognizing the City’s official apology for historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent.
We are seeking eight community members who are interested and engaged in Chinese Canadian history, heritage and the arts with a connection to Burnaby. Committee members provide expertise and guidance to the public art project team throughout the commissioning and development of the artwork, which serves as physical marker of the apology and a place for learning, reflection and collective healing.
“This project is about honouring Chinese Canadian history in Burnaby and ensuring the artwork reflects the voices, experiences and perspectives of the community,” said the Mayor Mike Hurley. “The project committee will play a vital role in shaping a meaningful and culturally reflective outcome.”
Applications are open until May 31. Check out our project page for scope of the committee, application eligibility and how to apply.
Public art has the power to energize public space. At its best, it promotes thinking and debate and helps us tell the story of who we are and who we hope to be. Burnaby’s Public Art Program harnesses ideas to spark dialogue about the past, present and future. By prioritizing community-engaged art, we seek to make creative expressions that are inclusive and reflective of the myriad perspectives that shape our city.
