Originally from Bucharest, Romania, Lache Cercel developed a love of jazz through a smuggled Stéphane Grappelli tape. Today, this Burnaby resident’s music is a merging of his roots and Eastern influences with western musicology. Firmly grounded in Roma (Gypsy) tradition, he combines that with klezmer, Middle Eastern, and European sounds all held together with jazz improvisation. He calls this dynamic and beguiling fusion “Roma Swing”. This guarantees to be a unique and magical evening and great way to kick off the season.
In celebration of his multi-cultural influences in music, Cercel’s ensemble features a selection of highly regarded artists. In creating and sharing his music, he’s committed to breaking down cultural barriers and sending a message that we are ‘all one nation’ by celebrating our similarities and growing from our differences.
