My name is Natalia Bember. I live in Burnaby and use a mobility scooter.
New buildings must have ramps, and they do. But Burnaby is full of older buildings, and most have none. There is no obligation to add one, and none even to answer when a resident asks.
Two years ago I asked the management of my rental complex for a ramp. As a tenant, I could not build it myself. A City building inspector visited and said it would be simple. I am still waiting. That silence is the pattern.
Sidewalks are the other half. Sometimes I cross traffic to find one.
I am running as an independent, with three priorities. Ramps in older buildings. Roads and sidewalks that work. A real voice for seniors, families and disabled residents.

Well here we are, 4 years later. AI has become almost fully integrated into our lives, we're in a trade war with America, the economy is teetering and our daily lives have gotten more precarious. I think I'm on my 6th ‘once in a lifetime, event.’
The common denominator here is that old ideas have impacted government at all levels. We're stuck watching instructional videos from the 1950’s that have little relevance today.
To enact change we need to start at the ground level. New ideas need to be enacted and my goal this time around in running for council is to get more young people involved in the process so we can start building a future we can believe in. That starts here in Burnaby.

Maita Santiago is a long-time Burnaby mom who was born in the Philippines and raised in Canada. She lives in Metrotown with her husband, two teenagers and dog Siopao.
Maita was first elected as a Councillor in 2022 and is running for re-election to make sure Burnaby continues to be a caring and well-managed city.
