We are launching residential water meters this summer to support water conservation, improve system efficiency and plan for future water needs.
Starting in June, we will install water meters at approximately 5,500 homes with meter-ready service connections. Additional installations will proceed this fall at properties with declared secondary suites. Work will continue in phases across the community over time.
What you need to know:
- Installation is mandatory and free.
- There will be no change to water billing at this time.
- You do not need to be home, as work takes place at the property line.
- Short water interruptions may occur during installation.
You will receive advance notice before work begins, including timing and contact information.
Water meters have been used for industrial, commercial and institutional properties in Burnaby for decades and are a proven way to measure water use. Expanding the water meter program to residential properties will provide a clearer picture of how water is used across the city, identify leaks sooner, support conservation and improve long-term infrastructure planning.
Communities with water metering often see reduced water use over time, helping protect water supply and support future planning.
