Housing Accelerator Fund

On March 17, 2023, the federal government launched the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), a $4 billion program administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to encourage and support action by local government to accelerate the supply of new housing. HAF funding provides an incentive to local governments to improve land use planning and development approvals to increase housing supply and speed up housing approvals.

The objectives of CMHC’s HAF are to:

  • Increase housing supply
  • Increase the range of housing choice
  • Increase affordable housing supply
  • Speed up development approvals
  • Enhance supporting infrastructure

CMHC has awarded the City of Burnaby up to $43.4 million of funding to implement a 10-point action plan, targeting the delivery of over 11,000 housing units by the end of 2026, as well as enhanced supporting infrastructure.
