Attention current Red Cross Water Safety Instructors
The Canadian Red Cross is winding down swimming lessons and lifeguard programs to focus on increasing humanitarian demands in other areas. Burnaby is excited to introduce the Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program in January 2023.
Until December 31, 2022, current Red Cross Water Safety Instructors can obtain their Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor Certification by taking a free Swim Transition Instructor Clinic. The normal instructor certification fee is waived. You’ll only need to purchase the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life Award Guide, which is needed to be successful in the clinic and to teach the Swim for Life programs.
If the transition clinic is not completed by the end of 2022, you will need to follow all normal procedures for Life Saving Society’s Swim Instructor Certification including earning prerequisites, successfully completing the full Swim Instructor course, and paying all related costs and fees.
For more information on how to transition to your Swim for Life Instructor Certification, visit the Lifesaving Society, BC & Yukon Branch website.
If you're passionate about water safety and want to make a difference in the lives of others, follow these steps to become a certified lifeguard and swim instructor.
These certifications are assets, but not mandatory to become a lifeguard with the City.
